Still Waters Restaurant opens in Snellville

Butty Rolls

I had heard of Still Waters Restaurant in Grayson, but had never eaten there. Recently, the restaurant owners closed their Grayson location and opened in Snellville.

I think it was meant to be.  I had a hankerin’ for some good pulled pork barbeque. Don’t look at me like that. You know the word ‘hankerin” fits just right in a sentence that also contains the word ‘barbeque.’

Snellville has been kind of teased with BBQ in the last few years.  The worst was losing A & J’s Tasty Pig BBQ to a fire.  There’s Uncle Betty’s BBQ near Eastside Hospital on Tree Lane. I think Uncle Betty’s is what’s called “Carolina” BBQ and it’s different.  I’m not saying it’s not good, it’s just different. It’s for those who like their barbeque sauce the color of a school bus. We tried Woody’s Bar-B-Que a few times before it closed.  My most powerful memories of Woody’s Bar-B-Que restaurant are of how hard their wooden bench seats were. I was pregnant when I ate there, that didn’t help make the seats any softer, let me tell you. Then Dickey’s BBQ opened on US-78 and didn’t last long. Now it’s a Gogi’s Asian Buffet.

Thanks to Twitter, I found Still Waters Restaurant. If not for Twitter, I wouldn’t have had any idea that Still Waters served Barbeque.  So on the Hub’s next day off, I said I wanted to eat at Still Waters.  After a lot of cajoling and arm twisting (yeah, right) I talked him into eating at a BBQ and Steak place (they also serve seafood).

You may be put off at first when you see a $7 BBQ pork sandwich. Do not be dismayed. You get a large amount of pork for the money, and the pork is served between two slices of Texas Toast and comes with french fries. I thought the french fries were extremely good, as was the sandwich. If you ask for the lunch special and it’s the BBQ sandwich, you’ll get a smaller portion of pork on a regular hamburger type bun. That’s what I had, and it was plenty of food for lunch for me.

One of their appetizers is called Butty Rolls ($6).  I thought that meant buttery rolls…but they’re not. They’re pulled pork rolled up inside flour tortillas then deep fried. They are served with barbeque sauce.  Owners  Carlyn and Anthony Butts (that’s where the name Butty Roll comes from, get it?) create their own mild and spicy barbeque sauces. I thought the sauces were extremely good, and I made short work of the Butty Rolls.

brunswick stew barbeque still waters snellvilleThe Brunswick Stew at Still Waters is a meal in itself. Large chunks of meat and just the right amount of everything. I’m not a foodie, so I’ll just tell you it tasted good. It tasted real good.  A person could practically make a lunch out of a cup of the Brunswick Stew, ($4).

It is just really nice to have such good quality food in Snellville at such a good price. Although their prices are good, I’m a little worried about how many people will find them tucked away in the Snellville Oaks Shopping Center (behind Dunkin Donuts and the movie theater, where so many restaurants have opened previously).  So that’s why I wanted to make sure you knew about this restaurant. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Still Waters is now on the radar thanks to you and ST. I too enjoyed lunch at the next table over from you and Joe Williams. I enjoyed their lunch menu and am looking forward to taking my Krewe over there for dinner one night. Anthony and Carlyn are good people with their passion for customer service showing up at Still Waters Restaurant. Another good restaurant in our growing city.

  3. My husband I am make it a habit one Friday nights to go to different restaurants. One day, I saw a young man flipping a sign on 78 and it said BBQ.

We went into Stillwater with our teenager daughter. At first, I thought I don’t know about this place because it is decorated yet and was not very full. But the owner came out and talked to us and the staff was very friendly.

The food was awesome! We didn’t have room for dessert but it sure looked good including that bacon brownie! We will be back and refer out friends too!

We’re going tonight for the first time. Reviews are solid and I can’t wait. Does anyone know if they offer a sampler plate? That would be awesome for first timers so they could try several different items at once.

Anyway, looking forward to a great dining experience tonight!
